Description

Precision Wedge Windows for Accurate Beam Control

Precision wedge windows are optical components with two plane surfaces that are intentionally inclined by a small angle. Also known as wedge prisms, they are designed to introduce a controlled angular deviation into an optical beam. Jiujon Optics manufactures precision wedge windows for laser systems, imaging equipment, spectroscopy, optical instruments, and other applications requiring accurate beam steering and light-path control.

Compared with a standard parallel optical window, a wedge window has a controlled angular difference between its two optical surfaces. This geometry allows the component to redirect transmitted light by a predictable amount while maintaining the optical transmission characteristics of the substrate. The wedge angle, material, surface quality, dimensional tolerance, and coating can all be customized according to the requirements of the optical system.

Precision Wedge Window Features

Jiujon precision wedge windows are manufactured from optical glass and other suitable optical materials according to application requirements. The optical surfaces are precision ground and polished to provide controlled surface flatness and surface quality.

Key features include:

  • Precision wedge-shaped geometry for controlled beam deviation
  • Optical glass substrates from CDGM and SCHOTT
  • Custom dimensions and thickness available
  • Controlled wedge angle according to optical design requirements
  • Surface flatness up to 1 (0.5) @ 632.8 nm
  • Surface quality of 40/20
  • Clear aperture of 90%
  • Anti-reflective coating options for improved transmission
  • Suitable for laboratory, industrial, laser, imaging, and measurement systems
  • Custom optical specifications available for OEM and volume production

The wedge angle is an important parameter because it determines the amount of beam deviation produced by the component. For small wedge angles, the approximate beam deviation depends on both the wedge angle and the refractive index of the substrate. This makes accurate control of the wedge geometry important for applications requiring repeatable beam positioning.

Wedge Prism Applications

Precision wedge windows can be used in a wide range of optical systems where controlled beam deviation or optical path adjustment is required.

Laser Beam Steering

A wedge prism can redirect a laser beam by a controlled angle. This makes precision wedge windows suitable for laser alignment, beam steering, optical scanning, and other laser-based systems. A pair of wedge prisms can also be combined and rotated relative to each other to provide adjustable beam steering.

Imaging and Microscopy

Optical wedge windows can introduce a controlled angular offset into an imaging path. They can therefore be used for optical alignment, image displacement, depth-of-field adjustment, and specialized microscopy or imaging systems.

Spectroscopy

Wedge-shaped optical components can be used in spectroscopy and optical analysis systems where controlled angular deviation or wavelength-dependent optical path control is required. Depending on the design, suitable optical coatings can be applied to improve transmission over the required wavelength range.

Optical Measurement and Instrumentation

Precision wedge windows are also suitable for surveying instruments, optical measurement equipment, machine vision systems, and other instruments where small and predictable beam deviations are required.

Optical Wedge Window vs. Wedge Prism

The terms optical wedge window and wedge prism are sometimes used interchangeably, although their typical applications can be different.

A wedge window generally has a relatively small wedge angle and is often used to reduce unwanted interference effects or prevent reflected light from returning directly toward a laser source. A wedge prism is commonly designed with a larger controlled angle when the primary purpose is beam deviation or beam steering.

For a technical explanation of wedge prisms, see the RP Photonics Encyclopedia article on Wedge Prisms.

For applications requiring a specific beam deviation, the wedge angle and substrate refractive index should be considered together. Accurate wedge-angle control is therefore essential when a wedge prism is incorporated into a precision optical system.
